How to calculate concrete volume

To calculate how much concrete you need, find the volume of your pour in cubic feet, then convert to cubic yards for ordering. For a rectangular slab or footing, multiply length × width × thickness (in feet). For a round column or circular slab, use the area of a circle (πr²) multiplied by height or thickness. For stairs, sum the volume of each step. This calculator handles all of these shapes automatically and converts the result into cubic yards, cubic meters, 60lb/80lb bag counts, and ready-mix truck loads โ€” including an adjustable waste factor for spillage and uneven subgrade.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much concrete I need?

Multiply the length, width and thickness of your pour (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For round shapes, use the area of a circle instead of length times width.

How many bags of concrete do I need for a cubic yard?

One cubic yard needs roughly 60 bags of 60lb concrete mix, or about 45 bags of 80lb mix.

How much waste factor should I add to a concrete order?

Most contractors add 5 to 10 percent extra for uneven subgrade, spillage and form variance. Irregular shapes often warrant 15 to 20 percent.

How many cubic yards fit in a ready-mix truck?

A standard ready-mix truck carries about 10 cubic yards, ranging from 8 to 11 yards depending on the truck.

Can I use this concrete calculator in metric units?

Yes โ€” use the US / Metric toggle above the tabs to switch every field to meters and centimeters and the headline result to cubic meters.

How do I calculate cement, sand and aggregate for a 1:2:4 mix?

Select the Sri Lanka (Mix) tab. Per 100 cubic feet of volume (with waste), a standard 1:2:4 ratio needs about 22.6 bags of 50kg cement, 44 cubic feet (โ‰ˆ0.44 cubes) of sand, and 88 cubic feet (โ‰ˆ0.88 cubes) of aggregate.

Agreement to terms

By accessing or using this website and the ConcreteCalc concrete calculator ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms & Conditions.

Use of the calculator

The Service is provided free of charge for personal, educational and professional planning purposes.

Estimates only โ€” no guarantee of accuracy

The calculations are estimates only, based on standard geometric formulas and typical bag yield figures. Actual needs can vary due to subgrade conditions, form accuracy, mix design and job-site variables.

  • Always confirm quantities with a qualified contractor, engineer, or your ready-mix supplier before ordering.
  • Add an appropriate waste factor for your specific job โ€” defaults are general guidance, not a guarantee.
  • We are not responsible for over-ordering, under-ordering, delays, or costs from reliance on these estimates.

No professional advice

Nothing on this site constitutes structural, engineering or construction advice. Consult a licensed professional for load-bearing structures, permits, or code compliance.

Intellectual property

The design, layout and code of this website are owned by ConcreteCalc unless otherwise noted.

Limitation of liability

The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. ConcreteCalc is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising from use of this Service.
